Leopoldstadt in Vienna

Leopoldstadt or in English, Leopold town is also known as lovely town in Vienna. It is the second district of the country and it is one of the most charming towns to boot. The city is a great tourist location for many reasons.

The best places to visit here are namely the Wiener Prater, an exquisite meadow that used to be closed from public. Wiener Prater is a huge public park in Leopoldstadt. The place making up the current Prater was first named by the Emperor Friedrich in 1162 when he awarded the land to the de Prato family of nobles. The land switched hands a lot till it was purchased by the Emperor Maximilian II and was made a hunting area. They eventually banned public entry to the meadow since there were poachers who frequented there. Then, it was opened to the public in 1766 by Joseph II condoning the setting up of café’s. This was what led to the establishment of Wurstelprater. Hunting still took place in the meadow up to 1920.

The Wurstelprater is an amusement park that boasts the giant Ferris wheel that has become iconic to the town and is located in the Wiener Prater area. There are also the usual carnival fare, carousels, bumper cars, rollercoasters and a lot more. The most famous mascot of the park is Calafati, a statue of a Chinese man nearly 9 meters in height. He stands in the area Riesenrad greeting visitors.

The district also has the Liliputbahn, a steam railway for visitors; the Schweizerhaus, which is a must visit for beer lovers; and the “Republic of Kugelmugel” which is a tiny nation that has nothing to do with Harry Potter.

For those who want a more intimate affair, Leopoldstadt also has a smaller park which is a kind of topiary Augarten. This is the place where the famous Vienna Boy’s Choir practices and performs, attracting many listeners. It is surrounded by the two Flak towers that were erected during World War 2.

This charming town is right smack in the center of the city of Vienna, and along with Brigittenau, is what constitutes a large isle surrounded by the Canube Canal and the Danube waters itself in the northern area.
